From the days of Brothers Grimm to the modern-day, fairy tales have been a part of our culture and a source of inspiration. As we become more aware of diversity and inclusion in our stories, a new wave of fairy tales is emerging. This new wave is dedicated to representing Black and Brown children. The Black Fairies are a stunning collection of illustrations that reflects the importance of seeing black children represented in fantasy stories and art. It captures the imagination and speaks to the importance of having characters that reflect the diversity of the world in which we live. For black and brown children, it is especially important to have representation in fantasy - to know that they are not excluded from these stories, that they can also be heroes and protagonists. This is why the Black Fairies illustration collection is so unique and important today.

Black parents and educators strive to share positive representations with their offspring.
In 2020, we witnessed Americans; Black, white and Hispanic, come together to assert that Black Lives Matter. Many of those young people will become parents within the next few years, infused with a new consciousness of how they want their children to engage with this society. And that’s the same way Beverlie Manson’s fairies have always lived
Corporations like Disney have been taking diversity seriously in the 21st Century, and that inclusive vision has paid handsome dividends. Just as Disney has created Tiana, Esmeralda, Iridessa and Penny Proud, all of us who create content for children should uphold a commitment to reflect the world around us.
In USA today, there are more than 10 million Black children [14% of all children] and a further 3.3 million more [4%] are children of mixed parentage.
